01What exactly is EGOT?
EGOT is a non-profit association that allows its members to share renewable electricity directly with each other. We work on a voluntary basis without profit motive – the focus is on the benefit for the community.
02How does an energy community work?
It's quite simple: Multiple participants – from two to several thousand – join forces to use energy together. Example: You have a PV system on your roof and produce more electricity than you need yourself. Instead of feeding the surplus into the public grid at low prices, you sell it at a fair price to your neighbors who don't have a system. Everyone wins.
03Why an association and not a cooperative?
For a very practical reason: As an association, we can keep costs low for our members – just €2 per month. This covers ongoing expenses like account management, billing, and advertising materials.
04Does EGOT replace my current electricity provider?
No. Your existing electricity contract remains unchanged. At night or with little sun, you'll get electricity as usual from your provider – whenever the community can't deliver. Note: Through additional producers like hydropower plants, wind turbines, or storage systems, the community can even partially supply electricity at night.
05What do I need to participate?
All you need is a Smart Meter. If you don't have one yet, you can request it free of charge from Netz NÖ. You also need an account on the Netz NÖ web portal where you agree to the so-called Opt-In. This allows your quarter-hour values to be transmitted to the EG – only then can we correctly assign you the green electricity.
06Do I need to install or rebuild anything?
No, no rebuild, no additional devices. You only need your Smart Meter and must agree to read the quarter-hour values (Opt-In on your grid operator's portal). Nothing more is needed.
07How does billing work?
Billing happens automatically every three months. With a SEPA direct debit mandate set up once, you have no further effort – and you can see your current consumption and feed-in values in the EnergyFamily web portal at any time.
08What are metering points and why are they important?
Each electricity supply and feed-in has its own metering point number. Anyone with a PV system has two: one for consumption, one for feed-in. You'll find the number on your annual bill or in your grid usage contract. It starts with 'AT' followed by 31 digits. Enter this number on the EnergyFamily platform.
09Where do I find my customer number?
On your grid access contract – it's usually also at the top of letters you regularly receive from your grid operator.
10What is the contract account number?
An identifier assigned by your grid operator (not to be confused with your energy supplier!). Grid operators are e.g. Netz NÖ, Netz OÖ, or Linz Netz. You'll find the number on your grid access contract or in your grid operator's letters. You'll need it for inquiries or changes.
11How is electricity distributed within the EG?
Distribution can be static (fixed shares) or dynamic. We use the dynamic model – it's significantly more efficient. Specifically, this means: Every 15 minutes, it's measured how much electricity the community produces and how much members are consuming. The electricity is then allocated according to current demand.
12Who can join an energy community in general?
It depends on the type of EG. For Renewable Energy Communities (REC) like ours, this includes: Private individuals, Municipalities and territorial authorities, SMEs (note: energy production must not be the main business – electricity and gas companies are excluded). For a Citizen Energy Community (CEC), large companies and electricity/gas providers may also participate – but they must not take control.
13Specifically: Who can participate in EGOT?
Anyone connected to the Neuhaus substation can become a member. This includes towns like: Neuhaus, Weissenbach, Furth, Altenmarkt, St. Corona, Thenneberg, Klein-Mariazell, Nöstach, Groisbach, Fahrafeld, Maria Raisenmarkt, Mayerling, Heiligenkreuz, Klausen-Leopoldsdorf, Hochstraße, Siegenfeld, and others. You can check your metering point number directly here. Tip: Know neighbors or friends also connected to the substation? Tell them about EGOT – the more participate, the better for everyone!
